Never been to therapy before? Wondering what to expect?

It’s normal to feel that way—but I promise, it’s not as weird or intimidating as you might think. Our first session is really a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about:

  • Your privacy, your rights, and how everything works.

  • What brought you in, what you’re hoping to get out of this, and how you’ll know if it’s helping.

  • Your past experiences (good or bad), things you like or don’t like, and anything you're feeling unsure or nervous about.

  • Any questions you have for me—about therapy in general, or about me specifically.

  • And most importantly, I want to get to know you—not just what’s hard right now, but who you are as a whole person.

We’ll take it at your pace. No pressure, just a conversation.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is a powerful form of mental health support that uses creative expression to help individuals explore and process their emotions. Through the use of materials like paints, clay, or collage, people can express feelings that may be difficult to put into words. This non-verbal form of communication offers a safe space to externalize complex emotions, leading to reduced anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and a greater sense of self-understanding.

Creating art in a therapeutic setting fosters increased self-awareness, helping individuals uncover thoughts, patterns, and behaviors they might not otherwise recognize. The act of creating can be calming and empowering, boosting self-esteem and providing a sense of accomplishment. Art therapy is also adaptable across age groups and settings—whether it's used to process trauma, build social skills in group environments, or support emotional healing in hospitals, schools, or private practice, its versatility makes it a valuable tool for mental and emotional well-being.

By utilizing response art, my art therapy supervisor, Barbara Fish, PhD, ATR-BC, ATCS, LCPC, HLM, encouraged me to deepen my understanding of the work I was doing during my internship in hospice care as a graduate student, and later while accumulating post-graduate clinical hours in elder care and private group practice. Learning to employ response art has become a cornerstone of my practice as an art therapist. It serves as another means for me to understand both myself and the individuals I serve.
